I'm wearing out I'm breaking down I have become so useless Patience is thin I'm burning out The endless grind is ruthless I earn my keep Just to give it back I'll tell you what the truth is It's by design we fall to dust There's no escape (There's no escape) I'm resigned to Rust (I am resigned to rust) I'm resigned to Rust (I am resigned to rust) There's no fixing There's no fixing There's no fixing this machine Cuz' it's working Cuz' it's working Cuz it's working just fine! I heard the pros But lived the cons We are no our own masters I've seen the facts Of what we do To feed those greedy bastards They drain your blood To oil the gears And so we die much faster And so I've learned To lie like you And become what I hate (what I hate) I'm resigned to Rust (I am resigned to rust) I'm resigned to Rust (I am resigned to rust) And I know why And I know why And I know why you are who you are And I know why And I know why And I know why you do what you do There's no fixing There's no fixing There's no fixing this machine Because it's working Because it's working Because it's working just fine!

about

When Covid-19 hit the US in full, I began to see just how terrible the business I work for treats its people. We have insurance, yeah, but that's because we're unionized (with a hella weak union that licks our company's boots every contract negotiation) and they really see us as replaceable interchangeable parts, despite all their trite mantras about respect and inclusion. They were willing to endanger all of us for the shareholders' benefit. After record-shattering first quarter profits, our company decided to lay off all non-union hires and slash store budgets, leaving employees who'd worked there for DECADES with barely enough hours to keep their health insurance (DURING A FUCKING PANDEMIC!!!), and, well, they're slime. And you know what? I was a manager at the start of all this. I was gonna "be the change you want to see in the world" and change the culture of management with my lefty fighting spirit, socially progressive worldview and, well, my trans-ness, something my employer has never had to think about before. And so, I thought it over, turned in my keys and told 'em to kiss my ass. I work like 10 hours a week now, but I'm not part of the oppressive power structure anymore and that feels pretty good.

Anyway, that's what this track is about: resigning myself to be one of the cogs instead of one of the operators.
